Lightweight, full impact
At only 45 kg/m² saturated weight, this system greens roofs that can’t support heavier build-ups.
In the heart of Manchester, a private residence has been transformed with the addition of a lightweight green roof. More than just an architectural flourish, this system makes it possible to green rooftops that would otherwise be too fragile to carry a traditional system. It shows that even where structural limits exist, nature can still find its way back into the city.
At only 45 kg/m² saturated weight, this system greens roofs that can’t support heavier build-ups.
From sound insulation to cooler surroundings, both residents and the community share the rewards.
A mix of 6 to 8 Sedum species ensures year-round variety and vibrant blooms.
Developed specifically for roofs with limited load-bearing capacity, the Sempergreen Lightweight green roof system has a saturated weight of just 45 kilograms per square metre — up to 30 percent lighter than a standard extensive roof. Its secret is the use of mineral wool fibres as the growing medium. Light as a feather, yet surprisingly effective at retaining water and nutrients, this material ensures that the vegetation thrives while the structure stays safe. The result is a roof that remains lush and healthy while keeping weight to a minimum, turning unused space into a patch of nature that cools, cleans and quietly supports life around it.
For the homeowner, the green roof provides clear advantages. It extends the lifespan of the waterproofing by shielding it from sun and weather, adds financial value to the property, and softens noise from outside. Indoors, rooms beneath stay cooler in summer.
But the benefits ripple outward too. Neighbours enjoy a cooler microclimate as the vegetation reduces the urban heat island effect. Pollinators find food in the blooming Sedum, increasing local biodiversity. The vegetation also captures fine particles from the air, improving overall air quality in the street.
This lightweight roof is planted with a diverse Sedum mix of 6 to 8 species. Their succulence makes them hardy and drought-resistant, while their flowers provide colour that shifts with the seasons, from subtle greens and reds in spring to bright yellow and pink blossoms in summer. For residents and neighbours alike, it is a daily reminder that nature can thrive even in dense urban environments.
An opportunity to showcase what lightweight systems can achieve
Without a lightweight option, this roof would have remained bare and lifeless. The Manchester project demonstrates how Sempergreen’s innovation opens doors for urban greening where weight has always been a barrier. Whether on residential buildings, garages or extensions, lightweight green roofs make sustainable design accessible to more people and more places.
What started as a limitation, a roof too weak for a traditional green roof build-up, became an opportunity to showcase what lightweight systems can achieve. With smart engineering and the resilience of Sedum, the Manchester project proves that every roof, no matter how constrained, can contribute to a healthier, greener city.
