Rolling green roof for Music City Center

The Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee is crowned with one of the largest green roofs in the US: 194.000 sqft (18,000 m²) of Sempergreen Sedum blankets. Designed to echo Tennessee’s rolling hills, the undulating roof brings nature back into the heart of the city while boosting biodiversity, comfort and sustainability.

Designed for curves

The Sempergreen green roof system fits undulating roofs, stable even in storms.

Instant lush coverage

Pre-cultivated Sedum blankets offer a 95% green result from day one.

Stormwater retention

The roof captures 2.6 million gallons of rainwater annually.

A landmark roof for Music City

Opened in 2012, the Music City Center is more than a convention hub, it’s a bold statement of sustainable design in downtown Nashville. Rising five storeys above the streets, the 350,000-square-foot building hosts concerts, trade shows and public events, but its most striking feature lies above: an 18,000 m² Sempergreen green roof. Designed to mimic the frets of a guitar and the rolling hills of Tennessee, the undulating roof is a living landscape in itself. Installed with Sedum-mix blankets, it was instantly green on the day of completion, providing an iconic view of waves of vegetation flowing across the skyline.

Architecture inspired by music

The Music City Center design references the soul of Nashville itself. From above, the roof resembles the body and frets of a guitar, while its rolling forms echo Tennessee’s hills. The Sempergreen Green Roof system, flexible enough for undulating slopes, was the perfect match. The design isn’t only symbolic, the roof also insulates the building, cutting energy demand for cooling, and reducing the urban heat island effect in the heart of the city.

Sustainability at scale

Covering nearly 191,000 square feet, the roof is one of the largest in the United States. It is designed not just for beauty but for performance: capturing up to 2.6 million gallons of stormwater annually. Instead of flooding the city’s 19th-century drainage system, rainwater is held by the Sedum blankets, absorbed by plants, and slowly released. This reduces pressure on Nashville’s infrastructure while creating a cooler, more resilient urban climate.

The Music City Center roof is home to four beehives

Direct green, instantly resilient

Sempergreen Sedum blankets arrive pre-grown with 95% plant coverage. This means the roof was lush and stable from day one; no bare soil, no waiting for growth, and no risk of substrate blowing away in heavy storms. With 14 Sedum species and wildflowers woven into the system, the planting offers year-round colour and biodiversity. Even in Nashville’s hot summers or during storm season, the system is built to last.

Biodiversity and wellbeing

A green roof is more than infrastructure; it’s a living habitat. The Music City Center roof is home to four beehives, producing over 100 pounds of honey each year while boosting pollination in the city. Birds, insects and wildflowers thrive in the micro-ecosystem created above the convention centre. For visitors and staff, the greenery provides a sense of calm and connection with nature, proving that even in dense urban spaces, biodiversity has a place.

A model for the future

Awarded LEED Gold certification and recognition from the National Organization for Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the Music City Center shows what is possible when architecture and ecology work hand in hand. Its green roof is not only a design icon but also a high-performance system for water, air and energy. Large-scale projects like this prove that Sempergreen’s systems are as much about reliability and resilience as they are about beauty. From stormwater retention to climate comfort and community pride, the benefits ripple far beyond the roof itself.
