Only 6 kilometers north of the Danish city Silkeborg a brand new residential development named Sommerfugleengen has arisen. At Sommerfugleengen – Danish for Butterfly Meadow – it is clear that nature plays a big role. The homes are built with respect for the surrounding nature and all slightly pitched roofs are equipped with a lightweight green roof system. In total the roofs are covered with 8,500 m² of Sempergreen Sedum-mix blankets. Thanks to the green roofs, the new development blends in perfectly with its green surroundings.

Green roofs part of climate-proof construction

The green roofs, installed by Hjorthede Planteskole A/S, are not only wonderful to look at. Green roofs offer many benefits for both people and animals. The Sedum plants that grow on a green roof promote the habitat of birds, butterflies and insects, herewith increasing local biodiversity. Moreover, green roofs are part of climate-proof construction. With an annual rainwater collection of 50-80%, green roofs are an effective means in the fight against flooding due to heavy rains. Green roofs retain water and delay rainwater runoff. This all helps to stabilize the groundwater level, reduces the peak load on the sewage system and reduces the risk of flooding.
