Multifunctional surface
Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.
On the Swedish island of Blidö, which is part of the archipelago off the coast of Stockholm, the existing tile roof of a residential accommodation has been replaced by a Sedum roof. The slightly sloping roof of the residential building in U-shape is equipped with a lightweight green roof system. The roof renovation and installation of the 220 m² green roof was carried out by Takfix.

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.
A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.
Blidö, part of the Stockholm archipelago, is known for its quiet bays, forests, and traditional Swedish summer homes. On this island, a U-shaped residential building underwent a roof renovation. The old tile roof was replaced with Sempergreen’s lightweight slightly pitched green roof system, covering 220 m². Installed by Takfix, the Sedum-mix blankets provided instant green coverage, creating a living roof that feels like a natural extension of its environment. From the very first day, the residents could enjoy a lush view that changes with the seasons.
Not every roof can carry the same weight, especially when it comes to retrofitting. The Sempergreen sloping roof system is designed specifically for pitched surfaces. Its lightweight build-up ensures safe installation on roofs with limited structural capacity, while special erosion protection keeps the vegetation securely in place, even during heavy rainfall. The result is a stable, durable roof that also helps keep interiors cooler in summer.
Green roofs don’t just look good; they function as miniature ecosystems. The Sedum plants attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators, offering them food and shelter in an otherwise built-up setting. On Blidö, where nature is a central part of daily life, the roof strengthens local biodiversity. By connecting with surrounding green areas, it helps create ecological stepping stones that benefit insects and plants alike.
The Sempergreen Pitched Green Roof System is always supplied with pre-grown Sedum-mix blankets. Thanks to these mats, the roof was delivered with at least 90% coverage at installation. That means little risk of erosion, no bare patches, and minimal maintenance requirements. A few checks per year and occasional fertilisation are enough to keep the vegetation healthy. For the residents, this means they can simply enjoy the benefits, from better indoor comfort to a longer roof lifespan, without worrying about upkeep.
Life on Blidö means living with contrasts: long, dark winters with heavy snowfall, followed by bright summers with salty sea air and intense sunlight. Roofs here need to withstand it all. That’s why the Sedum-mix used for this project was specially developed by Sempergreen for northern climates. The plant varieties are hardy and resilient, able to tolerate frost, wind, and long periods of drought. Even after months under snow, the vegetation quickly bounces back in spring, restoring its full green cover. This durability is not just practical, it ensures that the roof remains a thriving, living surface year after year, without the need for replanting or repairs. A reliable green solution, made for the Nordics.
For the residents of Blidö, the new green roof does more than replace the old tiles. It connects their home to the rhythms of the island’s landscape, reduces energy costs, and provides a haven for pollinators. It’s a clear example of how even small-scale projects can make a meaningful contribution to climate adaptation and ecological resilience.
