At this forensic psychiatric clinic, architecture is closely aligned with the treatment concept. Residents often stay for long periods, which makes a soothing, natural environment essential. The living walls offer visual comfort, lower stress levels and bring seasonal change into daily life. Their pre-grown vegetation ensures an immediate lush effect, while improving air quality and supporting a more humane, restorative atmosphere.
When architecture embraces nature, it quietly supports the healing process every single day.
In forensic mental health care, even small environmental cues can deeply influence daily wellbeing. Research consistently shows that access to greenery reduces tension, lowers heart rate and supports emotional stability. During the Covid-19 pandemic, several studies confirmed that people living near natural environments reported significantly fewer negative feelings such as stress, loneliness and sadness. For residents of the Van der Hoeven Clinic, who often stay for long periods and undergo intensive treatment, these psychological benefits are more than welcome. The SemperGreenwalls introduce layers of soft colour, seasonal change and a sense of life unfolding just outside their windows. This biophilic presence helps to create a calmer atmosphere and gently supports residents in staying grounded throughout their recovery process.
The design of the new apartments is a direct reflection of the clinic’s therapeutic philosophy. OPL architects crafted a setting in which everyday routines are mirrored as naturally as possible, helping residents prepare for independent living. The inner courtyard functions as a central, open-air corridor: after breakfast, patients walk through this garden space on their way to work, training or therapy. Along the way they experience daylight, weather and seasonal rhythms; subtle but powerful elements that reinforce structure, orientation and connection to the outside world. The green façades strengthen this intention by softening the building’s character, creating visual depth and supporting a sense of safety without compromising the strict security measures required in forensic care.
The Van der Hoeven Clinic carries a long and meaningful legacy. It traces its origins back to the Willem Arntsz Stichting, founded in 1461 when a generous Utrecht merchant left funds for a hospice for people with mental illness. Over centuries, the institution evolved yet continued to serve the community with the same underlying purpose: providing care in a dignified, humane environment. The new extension honours this heritage by combining advanced therapeutic design with natural materials, warm detailing and the green presence of living walls. In this way, contemporary forensic psychiatry is subtly linked to a tradition of compassion that has shaped Utrecht for more than five centuries.
Although the clinic lies close to Utrecht’s city centre, the direct surroundings used to feel socially unsafe, with narrow alleyways and neglected plots. As part of the expansion, the wider area was reorganised, making the new building an integrated piece of the neighbourhood rather than a secluded entity. The SemperGreenwalls help soften the transition between public and private space and provide a gentle, welcoming expression. For residents, staff and visitors, the greenery becomes a quiet counterpart to the intense emotional work happening inside the clinic. By improving air quality, reducing noise and adding visual calm, the living walls contribute to a healthier and more dignified daily environment.
The modular nature of the SemperGreenwall ensures long-term durability and flexibility, making it perfectly suited for institutional environments that require robust solutions. The system offers excellent acoustic benefits, stabilises temperatures along the façade and supports local biodiversity – all while requiring minimal maintenance thanks to its integrated Plant Care technology. These qualities align fully with the clinic’s ambition to create a future-proof building that supports healing not only through psychology and therapy, but also through the environment in which residents live.
