Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.
The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.
A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.
Løren School in Oslo takes a sustainable step by combining a Sedum green roof with innovative solar panels. This lightweight and efficient solution is a model for urban energy systems. Discover how biodiversity and solar energy come together!
Løren School in Oslo has taken a major step toward its sustainability mission by combining an existing green roof with innovative solar energy technology. The challenge was integrating solar panels without compromising the roof’s biodiversity or load-bearing capacity.
Thanks to the collaboration between Sempergreen and Over Easy Solar, the ideal solution was found. By using lightweight vertical PV units on the existing Sedum roof, the roof’s energy output increased significantly. This renovation project serves as an inspiring model for urban sustainability.
Løren Elementary School, with 750 students, places a strong focus on environmental responsibility. In 2022, the school aimed to take the next step in their sustainable journey by combining their green roof with solar energy to create an energy-producing roof.
The greatest challenge was finding a lightweight solution that could be seamlessly integrated with the existing Sedum roof while maintaining biodiversity and staying within the building’s load-bearing capacity. The school wanted a roof that not only generated energy but could also serve as a model for future green projects. Key requirements included preserving the quality of the green roof, efficient solar panel integration, and using innovative technology.
How green technologies can positively impact both the environment and energy production.
In collaboration with Over Easy Solar, a lightweight and prefabricated VPV solution was installed, specifically designed for Sedum roofs. This combination not only ensured seamless integration but also improved the performance of both the green roof and the solar panels. The synergy between Over Easy Solar’s vertical double-sided PV panels and Sempergreen’s lightweight Sedum roofs is unique. The vertical panels utilize light on both sides, while the green roof contributes to cooling and reflects sunlight (albedo effect), boosting energy output.
The combination of green roofs and solar energy delivered powerful, sustainable results. The 2022 pilot showed excellent energy yields, with the quality of the green roof even improving under the panels. In 2023, the project expanded further, resulting in an energy-efficient solution that supports the school’s sustainability mission. Thanks to the unique design of Over Easy Solar’s VPV units, the roof achieves lower CO2 impact, higher energy efficiency, and balanced energy production throughout the day.
Andreas Arnmann Nielsen from Oslobygg KF: “We saw excellent results from the 2022 pilot in terms of energy output, and the quality of the green roof was even better under the panels than on the open Sedum roof.”
