Sustainable Roof Upgrade

In Mörfelden-Walldorf, near Frankfurt am Main, the town hall has been fitted with a 650 m² green roof spread over two levels. The building dates back to the 1970s and is located right in the city centre. The municipality’s main criterion for choosing a green roof was rainwater retention. The requirement was to achieve a water storage capacity of 27 litres per square metre. For this reason, Sempergreen’s Click ‘n go trays were selected for the project. These trays meet the required standards to retain large volumes of water during heavy rainfall. The installation was carried out by Kolb Grünkonzepte in cooperation with Seitz Gartenbau.

Green roof easily installed around existing PV system

The town hall roof was already equipped with a photovoltaic system. Thanks to the Click ‘n go trays, the green roof could be installed quickly and easily around the existing solar panels. Construction took place during a very hot summer period with temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius. To protect the plants, the Sedum trays were delivered using refrigerated transport. As a result, the Sedum roof looked lush green, healthy and fully covered with vegetation immediately after installation.

Another advantage is that solar modules operate more efficiently at lower temperatures. The greenery of the roof helps to reduce the surrounding temperature, increasing the performance of the PV system.

Frankfurt’s strong commitment to green roofs

Frankfurt is one of Germany’s leading cities when it comes to greening urban areas. Green roofs and façades help to cool buildings in summer and create a more pleasant local microclimate. For this reason, the city of Frankfurt has introduced the Klimabonus programme, which reimburses up to 50% of the investment costs for green roofs and façades. With this funding scheme, Frankfurt supports private homeowners, property owners, companies and housing associations that want to add more greenery to their buildings.
