Sempergreen USA installed two outdoor SemperGreenwalls on the German Embassy in Washington D.C., covering a total of 140 m². Commissioned by the Federal Republic of Germany, the project was part of a wider renovation led by HPP International and contractor Grunley. Landscape architects OEHME, van SWEDEN integrated the green walls into the embassy’s architecture by enveloping the two fire staircases. What could have been a stark technical necessity has been transformed into a striking, living element that softens the appearance of the building and blends it harmoniously into its landscaped surroundings.
Green walls are more than aesthetics; they bring nature into everyday environments. At the German Embassy, staff and visitors alike benefit from the calming presence of greenery. Research in biophilic design shows that natural elements reduce stress, boost focus, and create a welcoming atmosphere; valuable qualities for a place that represents diplomacy and international relations.
Sustainability at the German Embassy does not stop at the aesthetics. The SemperGreenwall system used here is Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified, which means that its materials can be reused endlessly in new cycles. Nothing is wasted, and every part can become “food” for a new product. This philosophy perfectly matches today’s circular ambitions in architecture and gives added value for certification schemes such as LEED and BREEAM. For the Embassy, it underscores their commitment to a greener, healthier future.
The choice of a green wall on the fire escape was not only about design, but also safety. Plants naturally contain a high percentage of water, creating a natural fire-retardant barrier. On top of this, the SemperGreenwall has been extensively tested according to European fire safety standards. The Flexipanel itself, building block of the SemperGreenwall, achieved the highest possible classification, A2-s2,d0, while the complete wall system with planting is certified B-s2,d0. This makes the system safe to use in sensitive applications such as schools, hospitals, hotels, and indeed even on an escape staircase. A solution where safety and sustainability truly go hand in hand.
Unlike soil-based systems, SemperGreenwalls use a rockwool substrate that gives plant roots space and structure to grow long and strong. This ensures resilience throughout the year, even in the freezing winters of Washington D.C. Combined with the web-based Plant Care System, which provides water and nutrients on demand, the green wall remains healthy and vibrant in every season.
Thanks to the modular system, the SemperGreenwall adapts to virtually any surface. In this case, the panels were custom-shaped to wrap around staircases, but they can just as easily follow curves, angles, or even window frames. This flexibility allows architects to integrate green walls seamlessly into both historic and modern building.
The German Embassy project is a strong example of how public institutions can take the lead in sustainable design. Government buildings often carry symbolic weight; they represent national values and ambitions. By integrating green façades, roofs or indoor walls, these buildings can set the tone for a future-oriented approach to climate, health and liveability. Green architecture not only reduces environmental impact, it also sends a clear message: sustainability is not optional, it’s part of responsible governance.
