Direct-green from day one
Pre-cultivated Sedum-mix blankets arrive with 95% coverage, creating an instant green effect and minimising weeds.
In Zevenaar, 1,100 m² of Sempergreen Sedum groundcover transformed a grey traffic island into a lush, living landscape. The project adds colour, biodiversity and rainwater buffering, proving that even infrastructure can contribute to a greener, more climate-resilient city.

Sedum thrives under harsh roadside conditions, buffers rainwater and improves air quality.
Even traffic islands become stepping stones for biodiversity, supporting bees, butterflies and other insects.
In Zevenaar, a Dutch town near the German border, infrastructure has been given a green twist. A long central reservation and traffic island have been transformed with 1,100 m² of Sedum groundcover, turning a once grey and lifeless strip into a living part of the city. The result is not just a more attractive street view, but a resilient and biodiverse landscape that proves roads don’t have to be barren.
Roads are often treated as separate from nature, but the municipality of Dutch Zevenaar shows it doesn’t have to be that way. The Sedum blankets not only create a softer, more attractive view for drivers, they also trap CO₂ and particulate matter, directly improving urban air quality. For pollinators, the green islands serve as vital oases, helping them move across the city. The secret lies in the vegetation blankets. Rolled out like a carpet, they instantly transform bare ground into a lush surface. With dense plant coverage at delivery, weeds hardly stand a chance, saving time and maintenance. And because Sedum requires no mowing and very little care, the city benefits from lower long-term costs.
Sedum may be small, but it plays a surprisingly big role in urban ecology. Its flowers are rich in nectar and attract a wide variety of pollinators, from honeybees to solitary wild bees and butterflies. By flowering at different times across the growing season, Sedum provides a steady food source when little else is available in the city. For insects, these patches act as stepping stones that connect larger green areas, helping biodiversity find its way back into even the busiest streets.
Roadside environments are harsh; hot asphalt, exhaust fumes, strong winds and heavy rain put most plants under stress. But Sedum thrives in exactly these conditions. Its succulent leaves store water, making it both drought-resistant and capable of handling sudden downpours. Resilient, low-maintenance and evergreen: perfect for infrastructure projects where reliability matters.
The transformation of Zevenaar’s central reservation is modest in size but powerful in effect. It shows that even small-scale interventions can bring real benefits: cleaner air, better stormwater management, more biodiversity and a street view that residents and drivers enjoy. Instead of a neglected strip of land, the traffic island now plays an active role in the city’s green network.
Sempergreen doesn’t just supply plants, it delivers the full system. The groundcover build-up includes a weed barrier cloth, preventing unwanted growth from below, and is secured with biodegradable locking pins that hold the blankets firmly in place without harming the soil. This ensures durability, stability and an environmentally friendly installation method. Municipalities and contractors receive everything they need in one package, saving time on logistics and ensuring quality across the board.
Behind this direct-green result is Sempergreen’s strong production capacity. With extensive nurseries and reliable stock, even large projects can be delivered quickly and efficiently. For contractors, that means meeting deadlines without delays. For municipalities, it ensures a guaranteed high-quality green finish from day one.
The installation in Zevenaar was carried out by Ter Riele BV, with Sempergreen supplying the Sedum-mix blankets. Together, they turned a functional piece of infrastructure into a living landscape. A perfect example that traffic islands don’t have to be lifeless, they can be part of a healthier, greener city.
