Sedum Groundcover Enhances Stockholm’s Road Infrastructure

At Kungens Kurva, south of Stockholm, 13,000 m² of Sempergreen Sedum ground cover transforms the entrance of the new E4 Stockholm Bypass tunnel. Installed by Skanska Sverige, the lush greenery enhances the sloping and curved structure, seamlessly integrating infrastructure with the surrounding landscape.

Direct-green from day one

Pre-cultivated Sedum-mix blankets arrive with 95% coverage, creating an instant green effect and minimising weeds.

Sedum thrives under harsh roadside conditions, buffers rainwater and improves air quality.

Every square meter counts

Even traffic islands become stepping stones for biodiversity, supporting bees, butterflies and other insects.

At the Kungens kurva area, just south of Stockholm, 13,000 square meters of green groundcover has been installed on the entrance of a new traffic tunnel. The tunnels are part of an extensive road construction project through Stockholm by the Swedish Transportation Administration, called the E4 Stockholm Bypass. Sempergreen Sedum groundcover was used for both the sloping and curved exterior of the tunnel, commissioned by Skanska Sverige.

Green infrastructure enhances air quality and climate resilience

While the plants provide pleasant colourful views for the drivers, they simultaneously capture CO2 and particulate matter. Compared to grey infrastructure, the green groundcover also provides better drainage, helping to buffer the rain that falls during heavy downpours. The application of more green infrastructure in Stockholm is part of the city’s current Environmental Programme, to adapt the city to the changing climate and enhance its biodiversity.

Low-maintenance, large effect

With the pre-grown Sempergreen Sedum-mix blankets, installation on flat, sloping or curved ground surfaces gives a direct-green effect. Since Sedum is such a tough plant that’s suitable for many different climates, there’s no need for intensive or frequent maintenance, saving time and nuisance.
