SOPREMA Embraces Circularity with Green Roof

At SOPREMA’s new factory in Tongeren-Oost, a 2,500 m² Sempergreen Sedum-herb roof enhances both sustainability and climate resilience. The green roof complements SOPREMA’s circular production, reducing the site’s ecological footprint and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable building.

Green roof strengthens SOPREMA’s circular vision

At the Belgian business park Tongeren-Oost, SOPREMA’s newbuild factory and distribution centre have been fitted with a green roof. Sempergreen delivered 2,500 square meters of Sedum-herb blankets for this project. In Tongeren, SOPREMA produces and supplies sustainable insulation materials: circular XPS panels. Besides manufacturing sustainable products, the climate resilience and environmental impact of this new company location are also important aspects for SOPREMA. The green roof is part of the measures they have taken to minimize their ecological footprint.

Blooming roofs for more biodiversity

On the SOPREMA Belgium property the Sedum-herb roof contains 4 to 6 types of Sedum and 20 to 25 types of herbs. While the Sedum gives the roof a green appearance year-round, plants like chamomile and carnations create a beautiful floral roof in the spring and summer. This diversity in plants and flowers is also attractive for pollinators like bees and butterflies and makes a positive contribution to the biodiversity in the area.

Future-oriented business
At this sustainable newbuild property, SOPREMA is committed to producing locally and to creating products for circular building. Several solutions have been applied at the location to counter potential water and heat issues, including infiltration ponds, buffer basins, and permeable paving. The green roof also contributes to this; the Sedum-herb roof has a cooling effect indoors and outside of the building and buffers rainwater.
