Living Wall Enhances University of Chicago Keller Center Learning Environment

Nestled within the prestigious Keller Center at the University of Chicago, this project is not just another building—it’s a beacon of sustainable design! The Keller Center is setting the standard for eco-friendly architecture, leading the way for policy schools worldwide.

Cleaner air

1 m² of living wall filters fine dust, absorbs 2.3 kg CO₂ and produces 1.7 kg oxygen per year.

Cradle to Cradle certified

SemperGreenwall systems meet the highest standards for quality and sustainability, holding a Bronze-level Cradle to Cradle certification.

Extends facade life span

A living wall shields your facade from sun, rain, wind and temperature changes, extending its lifespan.

Bringing Nature Indoors for a Healthier Learning Environment

With a strong commitment to making a real impact on policy and civic engagement, the Keller Center is equipped to accommodate the school’s impressive growth, all while promoting a green and vibrant campus. The centerpiece of this initiative is the 3500 sq.ft. SemperGreenwall Indoor system, designed to bring nature indoors and enhance the learning environment. By design of Farr Associates Architecture & Urban Design, this innovative green wall not only beautifies the space but also contributes to a healthier atmosphere for students and staff alike.

In addition to achieving LEED Platinum certification, the Keller Center has also successfully met the rigorous criteria of the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge (LBC), earning certifications in the Materials, Beauty, and Equity Petals. The LBC program encourages the construction of buildings that are not just environmentally friendly but also restorative and regenerative, seamlessly integrating with the local ecology and culture.

A Game-Changer in Campus Design

The feedback from the university community has been overwhelmingly positive! Students and employees alike are raving about the transformation, noting how the greenery has enriched their experience on campus. Did you know that research from Harvard University reveals that individuals working or living in green spaces feel happier, healthier, and more productive? It’s clear that the Keller Center is not just a building—it’s a game-changer for the future of educational facilities!

The University of Chicago’s Keller Center is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future, one flourishing living wall at a time.
