Nature-Inclusive Living with Solar Green Roofs

Two care complexes with 38 newly built apartments have been built on the site of the former primary school ‘De Vlieger’ in the Dutch town of Hintham.

Multifunctional surface

Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the built environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

Solar Energy Meets Green Roof Design

Thanks to a cooperation between municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and foundation Steengoed, some units are occupied by young people with mild mental disabilities. The sustainably built apartments are equipped with heat pumps, triple glazing and solar panels, ensuring comfortable and energy-efficient living. For optimal environmental benefits, a green roof was essential of course! Therefore, a Sempergreen Solar Sedum roof was installed, with a combination of 110 solar panels on a Sedum roof of 1500m2.

Nature-inclusive design for more biodiversity

The new development has been designed to be nature-inclusive, with the buildings blending seamlessly with the adjacent ‘Annabos’ forest. This project focuses on encouraging biodiversity around the new buildings with Sedum roofs, bat boxes and various flowers and plants. Moreover, an old lime tree has been preserved and relocated, contributing to a healthy living environment for people and animals. Residents thus benefit from a green, vibrant environment that reduces heat stress and has a water-retention capacity to keep feet dry.

Solar Sedum Roof increases solar panel efficiency

The green roofs of the complexes are fitted with 110 solar panels, further enhancing sustainability. These Solar Green Roofs, installed by Gustaaf, improve the cooling of the solar panels, thus providing more efficiency. The combination of green roof and solar panels not only provides a higher energy yield, but also offers residents a beautiful green view and it contributes to the biodiversity and sustainability of the residential environment. Other benefits:

  • Higher energy yield – cooling effect of vegetation boosts solar panel efficiency.
  • Enhanced biodiversity – creates habitat for insects and plants in the urban area.
  • Extended roof lifespan – green layer protects the roof from UV and temperature fluctuations.[/box]
