Puhinui Station Interchange in South Auckland

The Puhinui Station Interchange in South Auckland features a 180 m² green roof with Click ‘n Go trays. The system supports cooling, stormwater retention and biodiversity, and includes smart irrigation for long-term performance.

Multifunctional surface

Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the built environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

A lush green roof system

As part of Auckland Transport’s commitment to future-proofing urban infrastructure, the Puhinui Station Interchange was enhanced with a lush green roof system – the final and largest in a series of green roofs applied to bus shelters across the region. To realise this vision, Greenroofs Ltd – Sempergreen’s exclusive partner in New Zealand – collaborated with Legacy Construction to install a 180 m² green roof using the Sempergreen Click ‘n Go Sedumtray system. This lightweight modular tray system was selected for its ease of installation and instant green coverage.

Pilot for broader application

The decision to install a green roof was driven by several key goals: reducing the Urban Heat Island Effect, managing stormwater naturally, boosting biodiversity, improving aesthetics, and inspiring public engagement. Auckland Transport also viewed this project as a pilot for broader application across other public infrastructure.

The installation of this extensive green roof was a success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Greenroofs Ltd, Legacy Construction, and Auckland Transport

The project stands as a major achievement in urban greening for public infrastructure, providing ecological benefits and an improved visual landscape for commuters.

Tailored for long-term performance

What sets this project apart is the early focus on long-term performance, with maintenance and accessibility thoughtfully integrated into the design. A fall arrest system was included to ensure safe future access, and a fully automated, Wi-Fi enabled irrigation system was installed to provide reliable water management throughout the year. Greenroofs Ltd has also been awarded the long-term maintenance contract and will visit the site quarterly to ensure optimal performance.
