Instantly green roofs
Pre-cultivated Sedum mats ensure a lush green result from day one. No waiting, no bare patches.
In the middle of Frankfurt’s business district, the iconic “Die Welle” complex has undergone a green transformation. Its rooftops, now covered with 3,000 m² of Sempergreen Traditional Green Roof system, blend nature with architecture to create a workplace focused on wellbeing, biodiversity and sustainable design.

3,000 m² of greenery create habitats for bees and insects while improving air quality across the district.
Nature on every level enhances comfort, reduces stress, and supports healthier, happier workplaces.
The transformation of ‘Die Welle’ (the Wave) in Frankfurt am Main reflects a new way of thinking about urban workspaces. Once a purely functional business complex, it has evolved into a thriving community hub where sustainability and wellbeing go hand in hand.
The green roofs, installed using Sempergreen’s Sedum Original Roof system, provide a living layer of vegetation across multiple roof levels. In total, more than 3,000 m² of greenery now enhance the complex’s appearance and performance, cooling the buildings, filtering fine dust, and improving the local microclimate.
At ‘Die Welle’ wellbeing isn’t an afterthought; it’s part of the building’s DNA. The office community offers regular yoga and breathwork sessions, after-work events, and wellness services to promote physical and mental balance. The addition of the Sempergreen roofs complements this philosophy: plants naturally improve air quality, regulate temperature, and create a visual calm that supports focus and creativity. Employees don’t just work in a building; they work in an ecosystem designed to help them thrive.
The Sempergreen Sedum Original Roof system is pregrown in specialised nurseries to achieve a minimum of 95% plant coverage before delivery. This ensures the roof is immediately green, even at installation, reducing the need for maintenance and preventing erosion. While young plants take years to reach full coverage, Sempergreen’s system delivers instant visual impact and long-term performance.
The ‘Die Welle’ complex consists of two main buildings spread over more than 75,000 m². The name itself refers to the wave-shaped façade that echoes the natural flow of the former Leerbach stream. This organic form is now mirrored by the green waves of Sedum on the rooftops, a design connection between past and future, between the urban and the organic.
Sempergreen’s modular system adapts easily to roofs of varying heights and slopes, making it ideal for complex city projects like Die Welle. Even on roofs with different inclinations or materials, the Sedum roof system can be installed seamlessly, ensuring consistent vegetation and optimal drainage.
The installation of the extensive green roof was carried out by Skyroofers, a specialist team experienced in large-scale rooftop vegetation projects. Their expertise ensured that every square metre of the 3,000 m² roof was laid with precision, from waterproofing to planting. Working high above Frankfurt’s busy streets, Skyroofers managed the complex logistics of the multi-level structure efficiently and safely. Thanks to their craftsmanship, the Sedum Original Roof system was installed flawlessly, instantly transforming the rooftops into living, breathing landscapes. The result is not just a roof, but an elevated green space that enhances both the city’s skyline and the wellbeing of everyone who works beneath it.
In a city dominated by glass and steel, every square metre of green space makes a difference. The green roofs at Die Welle absorb CO₂, capture rainwater, and reduce the heat island effect typical of dense city centres. More than just environmental performance, the greenery offers psychological comfort, reminding people that nature belongs in the workplace too.
The owners of Die Welle have long recognised the importance of ESG values. By investing in green infrastructure, they contribute to Frankfurt’s urban sustainability goals while also future-proofing the building. Green roofs like these can even help projects achieve LEED or BREEAM certification by improving energy performance and supporting biodiversity.
