IKEA Invests in Biodiversity with Sedum Roof

Sempergreen supplied 9,000 m² of Sedum mats for IKEA’s Ludwigsburg roof, enhancing insulation, reducing energy costs, supporting biodiversity, and creating a visually stunning, eco-friendly urban oasis.

Multifunctional surface

Every part of the roof contributes. Rainwater is buffered and nature is given room to grow.

Climate adaptive design

The roof stores water during heavy rainfall and helps cool the surroundings during summer heat.

Biodiversity in the built environment

A diverse planting plan attracts pollinators, birds and native insects. This turns the roof into a thriving ecosystem.

Eco-Friendly Sedum Roof

For the green roof of the IKEA in Ludwigsburg, Germany, Sempergreen supplied 9,000 m² of Sedum mix mats. The installed vegetation mats not only look beautiful but also provide cooling in the summer and extra insulation in the winter. This not only saves on air conditioning and heating but also contributes positively to the environment through energy savings, CO₂ absorption, and enhanced local biodiversity.

IKEA as a sustainable company

IKEA as a Sustainable Company The choice for a green roof by IKEA does not come as a surprise. Sustainability is high on the company’s agenda. And that is evident. For example, in 2020, IKEA was chosen as the most sustainable retailer in the Netherlands for the fourth time in a row. Furthermore, as a consumer, you have a choice of more than 4,000 sustainable products. Finally, the company has the ambition to be fully circular by 2030 and only use natural, renewable, or recycled materials.

Positive Impact on Biodiversity in Industrial Areas

Positive Impact on Biodiversity in Industrial Areas The IKEA in Ludwigsburg is located in an industrial area. Precisely industrial areas like this benefit greatly from the biodiversity of green roofs because there is generally little greenery to be seen. They often form a grey patch amidst rural areas and the relatively greener residential areas.

With green roofs, industrial areas can serve as a bridge between the different green areas. This allows them to offer insects, among other things, the possibility to move freely and migrate from one area to another. Additionally, they give local bird species even more surface area to reside.
