Living Facades Bring Nature to 147 Apartments

The WIR Quartier in Erfurt features 2,000 $\text{m}^2$ of SemperGreenwalls on three residential towers. This greenery connects spaces and ensures that every resident in the 147 apartments encounters nature right outside their home.

Cleaner air

1 m² of living wall filters fine dust, absorbs 2.3 kg CO₂ and produces 1.7 kg oxygen per year.

In the centre of Erfurt, capital of the German state of Thuringia, various green walls have been installed within the ‘WIR Quartier’ project on 3 residential towers of different heights. This new residential area offers living space for both seniors and young families. By applying large amounts of green in the form of a vertical greening system, multiple spaces are connected to each other. Moreover, each resident encounters a piece of nature in his or her own living space in one of the 147 apartments. In total, the green facades cover 2,000 m². The installation of the SemperGreenwalls was carried out by Köster GmbH commissioned by Bau-Kult GmbH.

Plant assortment tailored to the sun orientation of the facade

The green walls are spread over the three residential towers. As a result, each green facade has a different orientation towards the sun. That is why Sempergreen has developed two different plant mixes, tailored to the location of the facade. For example, there is a mix for the North-West and North-East facades, with plants that thrive in the shade, such as Asplenium scolopendrium, Bergenia cordifolia, Carex oshimensis Evergreen and Vinca minor. The mix for the South-East and South-West facades consists of plants that feel comfortable in the sun, such as Alchemilla mollis, Geranium renardii, Campanula poscharskyana and Ajuga Reptans.

Quality of life was of paramount importance during the construction of WIR Quartier. Thanks to a mixture of residents of different generations, mutual solidarity is created. For example, the green walls improve the local microclimate, reduce particulate matter and contribute to better air quality and lower the ambient temperature.
